As predictable as a Hollywood formula, the Screen Actors Guild handed out acting awards to the presumptive favorites in four individual categories, and a leading Best Picture contender from their five cast nominees.
Joaquin Phoenix, Renee Zellweger, Laura Dern and Brad Pitt all won their respective awards in leading and supporting categories, just as they have been throughout this awards season. (Meanwhile, Pitt’s ex Jennifer Aniston took home the Best Actress in a Drama Series trophy.)
At this point, if any of them lose their respective Academy Award categories it would be a major upset.
The only surprise of the night (though not quite a shocker) came at the very last when the ensemble of the South Korean thriller Parasite won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The critical favorite has struck the Hollywood zeitgeist, with U.S. actors swarming around the Korean cast at various awards season events. Now that love and admiration has been officially codified with this awards season hardware. Parasite marks the first ever foreign language film to win the top SAG prize.
Also, SAG’s Cast Award is definitely trending away from being a reliable Best Picture predictor. In the last 10 years, the two awards have only lined up 4 times.
Most of all, though, the Parasite win becomes another major hit against Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, which has been losing the momentum to the World War I epic 1917. It needed a Cast win here to still be considered a Best Picture contender. Now, short of Tarantino somehow snagging the Directors Guild honor this coming Saturday (an award that 1917‘s Sam Mendes seems on track to win), Once‘s shot for the top two Academy Awards has all but vanished.
The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards were handed out live on Sunday January 19, 2020 at 8pm EST/7pm CST/5pm PST, simulcast on TBS and TNT.
