“Who the hell is that guy?”
That’s the question Black Widow asks about a new foe she faces off against at the end of the new trailer for her stand-alone movie.
Well Natasha, I have no earthly idea, but of course I’m not a Marvel Comics die-hard fan. Maybe those who are might have some guesses as to who that mysterious villain is. (UPDATE: It’s most likely Taskmaster.)
Leading up to that moment, however, we get a sneak peak at more of the same from the first trailer for this mid-MCU adventure: Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), a.k.a. Black Widow, is reuniting with her secret agent super spy siblings Yelena, Melina, and Alexi in Russia (played by Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbor) for some action-packed uber-mission.
Set between the stories of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, this isn’t an origin story but rather an intriguing side narrative within the broader MCU. Given that, it’ll be intriguing to find out exactly who that new bad guy is, especially since it seems he’s never played a part in the MCU up to this point.
Hopefully it would suggest that, if this movie proves successful, Marvel producer Kevin Feige has a franchise arc already planned out. (Who am I kidding, of course he does.)
Interesting Oscar side note: Johansson and Pugh are currently competing against each other for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for their respective roles in Jojo Rabbit and Little Women.
Directed by Australian helmer Cate Shortland, Black Widow kicks off the summer movie season on May 4, 2020.
