I’d been thinking for awhile that Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood would win the Oscar for Best Picture. The Critics’ Choice Awards may have just predicted it as well.
The association of national broadcast film critics named Quentin Tarantino‘s ninth feature film the best one of 2019, giving it the most awards with 4 total. The writer / director took home Best Original Screenplay, Oscar-lock Brad Pitt took another Best Supporting Actor trophy, and this love letter to the end of Old Hollywood was also cited for Best Production Design.
Sam Mendes continues to build buzz for 1917. He won the trophy for Best Director in a tie with Parasite helmer Bong Joon-ho. 1917 also won for Best Cinematography and, inexplicably, for Best Editing. Yes, there were edits, but essentially the Critics Choice Association gave their prize to a “one shot” movie for digitally masking a handful of cuts. Ridiculous. I really hope the Academy doesn’t repeat that.
The other acting awards fell in line with recent trends: Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Renée Zellweger (Judy) for Actor and Actress, and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) for Supporting Actress.
Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman, which led all Critics’ Choice contenders with 14 nominations, left with only 1 award: Best Acting Ensemble. Little Women, another Oscar hopeful, also only took home 1 trophy: Best Adapted Screenplay for writer / director Greta Gerwig.
