Netflix is really gaining steam, with The Irishman leading the way.
The Critics Choice Awards (produced by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, whose membership is nationwide) unveiled the nominees for their 25th annual ceremony and Martin Scorsese‘s mob epic led the way, garnering nominations for Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Actor (Robert De Niro), Supporting Actor (Al Pacino and Joe Pesci), plus 8 more.
Netflix’s other big contender Marriage Story also scored big with 8 nominations, including Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay for its writer / director Noah Baumbach, plus nods for Actor (Adam Driver), Actress (Scarlett Johansson), and Supporting Actress (Laura Dern).
Placing second in overall nominations was Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood with 12. Like The Irishman, it cleaned up citations in major categories and tech awards. Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women was close behind with 9 nominations, Sam Mendes‘ 1917 had 8 (along with Marriage Story), and several others nabbed 7 a piece.
The Critics’ Choice Awards has gained particular prominence over the past decade as a reliable Oscar predictor. Unlike the Golden Globes, CCA doesn’t segment their categories between “Drama” and “Musical or Comedy.” As a result, their picks often look very similar to what we end up seeing from the Academy in the same categories.
Interestingly, the CCA dropped two acting categories this year, their genre slots for Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy. I’m a fan of this decision, as they serve little purpose to the overall awards conversation and end up being a time-waster during the telecast.
There were few surprise additions or omissions, although of the major nominees it’s the gritty New York drama Uncut Gems that remains a long shot for Picture and Director nods at the Academy Awards despite getting them here. Star Adam Sandler, however, remains a major Actor contender and he’s nominated here as well.
Personally I’m disappointed that Rian Johnson‘s Knives Out only received nods for Screenplay and Acting Ensemble. I hope the Academy appreciates this stellar Hollywood effort more than the Critics have, as it warrants consideration in categories up and down the slate. (It also picked up a Best Comedy nomination but that means nothing in terms of Oscar buzz.)
The 25th Annual Critics Choice Awards (chosen by the Broadcast Critics Film Association, a nationwide group of TV and Radio critics) will be televised live Sunday night January 12, 2019, on the CW (one week after the Golden Globes on NBC).
