They’re back…and they’re everywhere.
Working as a segue between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the upcoming Jurassic World 3, the new 8-minute short film Battle At Big Rock is the first example of what the end of Fallen Kingdom teased: dinosaurs have escaped island quarantine and are now spreading out across the U.S. mainland and beyond.
Here, a family of campers in an RV have a front row seat to a dino battle at their campfire before (inevitably) one of the dinos makes their RV its target. The sequence follows a “Let’s not overthink this and just copy a scene from The Lost World: Jurassic Park” approach. (The end credits even include a music cue from that 1997 sequel’s main theme.)
Directed by Colin Trevorrow, who helmed the first Jurassic World and returns for the third, Battle At Big Rock stars André Holland (Moonlight, Hulu’s Castle Rock) as the dad of the family that gets more of nature than they bargained for. Whether they’ll be a part of the movie-to-come remains to be seen.
This fun extra is the first salvo of a major marketing push by Universal Studios, who went so far as to premiere the short on FX during the network’s primetime programming on Sunday, September 15 before dropping it online today. For now, this mini-movie morsel will serve as a fun holdover for Jurassic diehards who still have to wait until Summer 2021 for the next feature adventure.
And, as with all major blockbuster IPs, be sure to watch Battle At Big Rock all the way through the credits; included are snippets of behind-the-scenes footage from Jurassic World 3, currently in production.
