Breaking up is hard to do, especially when love was there (and may still be).
That’s the melancholic spirit which imbues the first two teasers for Marriage Story, the latest New York set character drama from writer/director Noah Baumbach (The Meyerowitz Stories). It stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as the husband-and-wife who find themselves at a crossroads, with each teaser (seen below) focusing on their characters Charlie and Nicole from the other’s perspective.
While certainly influenced by 70s cinema, Baumbach looks to be taking a more tender, mournful tack to this dynamic than the explosive fireworks often associated with the genre (Kramer vs. Kramer, Ordinary People, et al), and with more sympathy than the dry satire of Woody Allen (of whom Baumbach has always been an acolyte).
Co-starring Laura Dern, Alan Alda, and Ray Liotta, Marriage Story will premiere this fall (date TBD) in limited theatrical release and on Netflix after it completes its fall festival circuit tour, one that Netflix hopes will kick off an awards season run.
