I’ve recently lamented the carbon copy nature of Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood. That take, I’ll acknowledge, is a minority opinion, but when I see a trailer like this, well, this is the kind of daring, original auteurism I’m holding out for.
The Lighthouse is the sophmore film from writer / director Robert Eggers. His debut The VVitch was a chilling piece of art house horror made immenently more disturbing by Eggers deeply-researched fidelity the 17th Century, its time, place, and religious practicies, right down to the era’s now-obscure vernacular.
The Lighthouse looks to be another despairing descent into madness, shot in a stark black-and-white that evokes classic trascendentalists like Bresson and Dreyer (though Eggers style is far more operatic). It’s anchored by Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, too, which makes the prospects of this film’s potential all the more exciting.
Having debuted to raves at the Cannes Film Festival in May, The Lighthouse opens in limited release this fall on October 18, 2019, and expands in the following weeks.
