Rian Johnson did it, with the all-star cast in the movie theater. That’s the reveal in this first trailer for Knives Out, Johnson’s follow-up to Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
The writer/director of such critically-acclaimed films as Looper and Brick has returned to his own new material, this time in a classicly-styled Agatha Christie-ish murder mystery whodunit revolving around the death of a patriarch from a wealthy family.
I love seeing Rian (or any director) embracing such an old school genre piece and, as one would imagine, it looks great in terms of its film’s visual polish. The actual tone of the material, however, has me on the fence. It all feels just a tad too exaggerated and self-aware, like it’s winking but not trying to be a parody or satire. That’s a difficult line to walk, and in context of the full movie (rather than a clipped-together trailer) it might gel and feel exactly right.
For now, though, it has me in wait-and-see mode, but certainly Johnson’s history keeps me hopeful, as does that dream cast which includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Katherine Langford, Lakeith Stanfield, Jaeden Martell, and Christopher Plummer.
Knives Out opens in theaters this holiday season on November 17, 2019.
