Roland Emmerich is returning to a battle in the skies, but instead of sci-fi space invaders he’s jumping back to America’s counter attack to Pearl Harbor.
Using the same title as the 1976 film about the same event, Midway uses the latest digital effects to depict the harrowing action of warfare in the decisive battle that turned the tide in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. This may not have quite the star power of the original (which included Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, and Toshirô Mifune just to name a few), but it’s taking the same deep bench all-star cast approach.
The first trailer is visually impressive, and it plays to Emmerich’s strengths. Even though his Independence Day was known for its destruction of iconic United States landmarks, it was Emmerich’s assembly of aerial dogfights that best revealed to his talents as an action director. The same is on stunning display here, making Midway a perfect showcase for Emmerich’s visual bravado.
Playing like a sequel to Michael Bay‘s Pearl Harbor, this looks to embrace the same approach: a throwback to the purely patriotic tone and spirit of films from Hollywood’s Golden Age but brought to life with the spectacle of today’s latest technology.
Starring Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid, Ed Skrein, Darren Criss, Keean Johnson, Alexander Ludwig, Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano, Luke Kleintank, and Jun Kunimura, Midway opens early in the holiday season on November 8, 2019.
