Just when I think I may have over-gushed about the original Trolls in my 3 1/2 star review, this sequel trailer comes out in all of its vibrant glory and I stop questioning my initial instincts.
Like the funtastic DreamWorks hit before it, Trolls World Tour boasts a level of visual splendor and detail — in color, design, and rich physical texture — that nobody this side of Pixar is achieving.
This time around, the Troll world not only expands in terms of more troll lands and peoples but also more music. Well, ALL music. If the first movie was exclusively pop, this one embraces rock, country, soul, funk, techno, and more — even classical.
Original troll stars Poppy and Branch (Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake) are back, and their world is rocked by the evil Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) and her dad King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne).
Other genre voices include Funk masters Mary J. Blige, George Clinton and Anderson Paak, Country is crooned by Kelly Clarkson as Delta Dawn, Sam Rockwell as Hickory and Flula Borg as Dickory. J Balvin heads Reggaeton, Anthony Ramos Techno, Jamie Dornan jazz, and Ester Dean is a Pop addition. L.A. Philharmonic maestro Gustavo Dudamel voices Trollzart along with Charlyne Yi as Pennywhistle from the land of Classical.
But my favorite newbie may be Kenan Thompson as the teeny weeny hip-hop baby Tiny Diamond.
Trolls World Tour rocks theaters next spring on April 17, 2020.
