Netflix sure knows how to keep a surprise and then pop it on the culture.
Their latest cool project to come out of nowhere — which is scheduled to drop in a week! — is a short film from arguably the greatest director on the planet right now, Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, The Master, Phantom Thread, et al).
Titled Anima, the short is made as a visual companion to the release of Thom Yorke‘s new solo album of the same name; yes, the collaboration is that cool. Anderson is no stranger to Radiohead musicians, of which Yorke is the lead singer and main songwriter. The band’s guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood has become PTA’s go-to film composer.
In addition, the short’s cinematographer is Darius Khondji, the legendary D.P. known primarily for his work on early David Fincher films (Se7en, Fight Club, and more).
This surprise trailer doesn’t tease much other than the collaboration itself but, honestly, that’s more than enough.
Anima will hit Netflix on Thursday June 27, 2019 and, for a lucky few in select markets, there will be IMAX screenings the day before on Wednesday June 26.
