There are certain directors and actors whose films I’ll always see simply because of who they are, regardless of what the film actually is. Judi Dench is one of them, and the upcoming Cold War spy drama Red Joan is a perfect example of what I’m talking about.
I’d have little interest in going out of my way to catch this period thriller — perfectly polished though it may be — except for the fact that Judi Dench is in it. Just watch the trailer and you’ll see what I mean. She’s so real, authentic, and compelling, bringing soulful, palpable emotion to the screen in a way that’s utterly fascinating, not to mention spontaneous and truly of the moment.
The Academy Award winner would be on my generational Mount Rushmore of living actresses — Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Juliette Binoche, and Saoirse Ronan — and I will be there for anything she does, especially since we’ll have so few opportunities left.
Red Joan opens this spring in April 2019.
