Spielberg Just Met A Girl Who’s His Maria For WEST SIDE STORY Remake (NEWS/VIDEO)

This is Rachel Zegler, the 17-year-old New Jersey high school student that Steven Spielberg just cast as Maria in his upcoming remake of West Side Story.

Uh, gurl can *sang*, y’all. Here she is belting out Lady Gaga‘s “Shallow” for a mic check. (See tweet video below. And yes, she also has a YouTube channel.)

Other casting announced: Ariana DeBose as Anita (she was a member of the original Hamilton ensemble), David Alvarez as Bernardo (he was one of the boys who originated the Billy Elliott role on Broadway for Billy Elliot the Musical), and Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino (member of Hamilton‘s touring production).

They’ll be joining the previously announced Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) who’s playing Tony and Rita Moreno, the original Oscar-winning Anita who will play Valentina, a reimagined (and expanded) role of the soda shop owner Doc.

With a screenplay adaptation by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America; scripts for Spielberg‘s Lincoln and Munich), the production and release schedule for West Side Story remains an open question, but it would appear that it’s Spielberg‘s next project before the still-planned Indy 5 with Harrison Ford.
