ALADDIN Live Action First Look Photos Aren’t Magical (IMAGES)

Aladdin

They’re not bad either.

Looking pretty much exactly as you’d expect, the first official photos of Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake debuted on Entertainment Weekly, complete with a cover story.

And they’re fine.

Displaying the kind of high dollar gloss of Hollywood mediocrity, these images don’t inspire much — either awe or anger. The real first test for how this might play will come with an official trailer, one that shows the characters and actual action. All we got from that CGI-laden tease in October was a confirmation that this “live action” will largely be  digitally animated.

Which may lead to the point of these photos: showing actors on sets, on location (including in footage from a new video promo embedded into the EW article), in a world that’s actually real.

But for now, even if these images don’t thrill you, let’s at least be glad they’re not disasters.

That depends on your perspective, of course. On cue, the Twittersphere is throwing all kinds of shade, as one would expect.

Aladdin — directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Will Smith as the Genie — opens on May 24, 2019.
