Just when Roma looked unstoppable…
One day after Alfonso Cuarón‘s passion project swept six different critics groups honors, the actual Critics’ Choice Awards flipped the script. Fueled by a stellar actress trio and a deep bench of craft achievements, The Favourite led the 24th annual Critics’ Choice slate with 14 nominations including Best Picture.
Marvel’s game-changer blockbuster Black Panther was second with 12 nominations, although shockingly that did not include director Ryan Coogler.
A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, Green Book, Vice, First Man, and Roma all received several nominations across multiple categories, including Best Director for all five films where they joined The Favourite‘s Yorgos Lanthimos. Each is also up for Best Picture, along with If Beale Street Could Talk and Mary Poppins Returns.
Other popular possibilities like Crazy Rich Asians and A Quiet Place didn’t make the cut in the major categories but did pop up in the genre slots of Comedy and Horror.
Two of the year’s best acting performances that haven’t gained traction this awards season were also snubbed here: Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal in the 1960-set indie drama Wildlife. Their Oscar hopes are now most likely dashed.
The 24th Annual Critics Choice Awards (chosen by the Broadcast Critics Film Association, a nationwide group of TV and Radio critics) will be broadcast live Sunday night January 13, 2019, on the CW (one week after the Golden Globes on NBC).
