Toronto Hops On ROMA Caravan For Best Film (AWARDS 2018)

Roma is crossing all borders now.

The Toronto Film Critics Association became the latest group of critics to name Roma the Best Film of 2018. They join their colleagues from New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Alfonso Cuarón was also name Best Director for his passion project.

Ethan Hawke (First Reformed), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), and Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) all picked up more wins for (respectively) Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actress, each adding to their ever-increasing hauls. First Reformed and The Favourite also tied for Best Screenplay.

A surprise citation, however, was given to Steven Yeun for his Supporting Actor turn in the hailed South Korean film Burning.  Also, in what appeared to be a compromise, the Toronto crix named Burning the year’s Best Foreign Language Film instead of Mexico’s Roma. As they put it in their tweet that announced the Foreign winner, “The overlap of Best Foreign and Best Picture sparked a lot of dialogue.”

First timer Boots Riley picked up another Best First Feature award for his debut film Sorry To Bother You.
