When DC debuts two different first-look trailers on the same day – and SHAZAM! is the more promising one by a considerable margin – that’s not a good omen.
Fresh out of Comic-Con comes the first preview for Aquaman, the latest entry from the DCEU that’s desperate to match the Wonder Woman mystique.
This trailer doesn’t.
Despite looking like the most expensive DC movie ever made (it’s not; the tab for Batman V Superman was double), Aquaman comes off as a cheeky digital effects explosion but little else, wanting to brandish some sort of cocky bad boy swagger that doesn’t really translate.
Star Jason Momoa‘s performance feels more like an ongoing pose than a credible character, and the plot beats hit the same, tired, generic hero’s journey kind of notes. But hey, it’s a trailer, so one can hope the actual movie has more layers and surprises.
We’ll know when Aquaman – co-starring Amber Heard Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Patrick Wilson , and Nicole Kidman – opens this holiday season on December 21, 2018.
