It may be too soon to anoint Timothée Chalamet as the best actor of his millennial generation, but it sure seems like a credible leap to take after watching the first trailer for Beautiful Boy.
Based on the two memoirs by father and son David and Nic Sheff, the 22-year-old Chalamet delivers on the magnetic potential he displayed with his Oscar-nominated turn in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name. Steve Carell co-stars as David, Nic’s dad, as the father who struggles to help his son overcome a drug addiction.
For his part, Carell – who can occasionally seemed forced in these tortured dramatic roles – looks equally impressive, with possibly the best effort of his career.
From director Felix Van Groeningen, whose 2012 indie The Broken Circle Breakdown was a real discovery, Beautiful Boy co-stars Maura Tierney and Amy Ryan. It opens in limited release on October 12, 2018.
