Just call it Despicable Green.
Illumination Entertainment, the makers of the Despicable/Minions franchise and other hits like The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, is set to release their second Dr. Seuss feature (following The Lorax) with The Grinch.
In this first full-length official trailer (following a previous teaser) we see that this adaptation is appropriately titled, revealing a tale that expands far beyond how the Grinch stole Christmas to get his whole backstory.
It’s all done in light, goofy fun, and in very Christmas-y settings, but one also hopes there’ll be more sentiment than what’s conspicuously absent here.
Benedict Cumberbatch provides the voice of the green holiday villain; he’s as good a casting choice as any, I guess, but it’s also clear that it’s virtually impossible to match the iconic sound of Boris Karloff.
The Grinch kicks off this holiday season on November 9, 2018.
