There’s a reason The LEGO Movie was such a huge hit, a core trait that went beyond and deeper than childhood nostalgia, pop culture references, eye-popping animation, or even the genuinely witty comedy.
It was the “Everything Is Awesome” ethos embodied by Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt, that gave this brand its beloved identity. That pure innocence and indefatigable joy, no matter what, is the dose of feels that people loved and needed.
In the trailer for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, they double-down on that gleeful bliss by, of all things, contrasting it with a Mad Max style post-apocalyptic hellscape, LEGO style. It’s a brilliant conceit, and the trailer plays like gangbusters. Hopefully the actual sequel will, too.
With voice co-stars Elizabeth Banks, Channing Tatum, Will Arnett, Jonah Hill, and Tiffany Haddish, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part opens early next year on February 8, 2019.
