You know nothing, Star Wars fans.
Coming completely out of nowhere, Lucasfilm dropped a Death Star sized announcement into its expanding universe: Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be creating and producing an entirely new series of Star Wars films. Not a bad Plan B to follow up with after their now-defunct controversial HBO series Confederate.
The Benioff / Weiss Star Wars films will be completely separate from the Skywalker saga and the new trilogy that Last Jedi writer / director Rian Johnson is working on.
No plot details, production schedules, or release dates were given.
In fact, Lucasfilm’s vague press statement wouldn’t even quantify this new project as a “trilogy” but simply a “series”. In the statement, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy made mention of the writing / producing duo’s strength with mythology, a hint of what could possibly end up being a very ambitious endeavor.
Of course, my first question is the most obvious one: who will be the Mother of Rancors?
