My review of Mary and the Witch’s Flower, for The Tulsa Voice. It’s the first feature-length anime from Japan’s Studio Ponoc, founded by former artists from Hayao Miyazaki‘s famed Studio Ghibli.
Based on a popular children’s book, this family-friendly story of a girl whisked off to a Witch’s College is “conjured from an LSD-laced imagination, a trippy gonzo vision on par with the Ghibli aesthetic.”
“Visually and tonally, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is Ghibli through and through, but thematically it sets its own postmodern course.”
