Apropos of mostly hunches, here’s my completely pointless list of predictions for who will win the film awards at the 75th Annual Golden Globes, handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and hosted by NBC Late Night host Seth Meyers. I’m remaining neutral on the TV categories.
Below each prediction, I provide brief reasoning for my choice and the other nominees for each category.
75th GOLDEN GLOBE PREDICTIONS
Films of 2017
Best Motion Picture – Drama
PREDICTION: The Shape of Water
(The movie with the most nominations will win here)
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
PREDICTION: Get Out
(Setting aside that this isn’t a comedy, a win here will cement Get Out as the Oscar frontrunner…that is if Lady Bird doesn’t take it.)
- The Disaster Artist
- The Greatest Showman
- I, Tonya
- Lady Bird
Best Male Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama
PREDICTION: Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
(It’s a close call between Oldman or Chalament; I’ll go with the veteran)
- Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
- Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
- Tom Hanks, The Post
- Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
Best Female Performance in a Motion Picture – Drama
PREDICTION: Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
(Likely a tight race with McDormand and Streep, but Hawkins is the performance to love as well as admire)
- Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game
- Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- Meryl Streep, The Post
- Michelle Williams, All The Money in the World
Best Male Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
PREDICTION: James Franco, The Disaster Artist
(Wouldn’t be shocked if Kaluuya wins, but my bet is that the HFPA wants to put Franco on that stage)
- Steve Carell, Battle of the Sexes
- Ansel Elgort – Baby Driver
- Hugh Jackman – The Greatest Showman
- Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Best Female Performance in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
PREDICTION: Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
(After the Globes, the Best Actress race will be Ronan vs. Hawkins)
- Judi Dench, Victoria & Abdul
- Helen Mirren, The Leisure Seeker
- Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
- Emma Stone – Battle of the Sexes
Best Male Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture
PREDICTION: Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
(Dafoe is already a lock for the Oscar; this is just another notch in the belt along the way)
- Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name
- Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
- Christopher Plummer, All The Money in the World
- Sam Rockewell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Best Female Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture
PREDICTION: Allison Janney, I, Tonya
(Oscar favorite Laurie Metcalf could easily win here for Lady Bird, but I have a hunch that the HFPA loves Janney and will also love her gonzo performance)
- Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
- Hong Chau, Downsizing
- Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
- Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water
Best Director
PREDICTION: Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
(Really tough call here, but I think Nolan eeks out over del Toro and McDonagh)
- Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
- Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- Ridley Scott, All the Money in the World
- Steven Spielberg, The Post
Best Screenplay
PREDICTION: Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig
(With Get Out snubbed here, a Greta Gerwig win seems the easy choice)
- The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro and Vanessa Taylor
- The Post, Liz Hannah and Josh Singer
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh
- Molly’s Game, Aaron Sorkin
Best Original Score
PREDICTION: The Shape of Water, Alexandre Desplat
(Everyone but Williams has a chance, but Desplat’s only real competition may be Greenwood)
- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Carter Burwell
- Phantom Thread, Jonny Greenwood
- The Post, John Williams
- Dunkirk, Hans Zimmer
Best Original Song
PREDICTION: “Mighty River” – Mudbound (Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq, Laura Stinson)
(The Greatest Showman songwriters won for La La Land last year, and Coco would be deserving, but the HFPA will want to have a star like Blige accepting.)
- “Home” – Ferdinand (Nick Jonas, Justin Tranter, Nick Monson)
- “Remember Me” – Coco (Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez)
- “The Star” – The Star (Mariah Carey, Marc Shaiman)
- “This Is Me” – The Greatest Showman (Benj Pasek, Justin Paul)
Best Animated Feature Film
PREDICTION: The Breadwinner
(Coco could win, and I almost went with Loving Vincent, but the Foreign Press will go with the Foreign entry)
- The Boss Baby
- Coco
- Ferdinand
- Loving Vincent
Best Foreign Language Film
PREDICTION: First They Killed My Father (Cambodia)
(The HFPA will love having director Angelina Jolie on their stage again.)
- A Fantastic Woman (Chile)
- In the Fade (Germany)
- Loveless (Russia)
- The Square (Sweden)
