Ride into the nostalgia zone.
Access Hollywood, the entertainment gossip show, scored a surprise scoop during a puff piece interview with Tom Cruise. The action star icon let slip the official title of the confirmed Top Gun sequel:
Top Gun: Maverick
In the clip (see below), Cruise goes on to share more details, assuring fans that he and the film’s producers aren’t going to fix what ain’t broke:
- “We’re gonna have the same tone that we had with the first one. Stylistically it’s gonna be the same. We’re gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. Aviators are back. The need for speed, we’re gonna have big machines. It’s gonna be a competition film like the first one, and it’s gonna be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”
That last comment is the best tell: “the same tone as the first one, but a progression for Maverick.”
That’s exactly what it should be. No need to overthink this. Give us exactly what we want, including a throwback soundtrack, without keeping Maverick in some form of forced arrested development.
Filming for Top Gun: Maverick begins in 2018, with a likely release window of Summer 2019.
