Boo. In what is the antithesis of how a new Best Actor winner should strategically follow-up the biggest boost of his career, recent Academy Award recipient Casey Affleck reteams with actress Rooney Mara and filmmaker David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon) in a strange, experimental low budget movie that had people talking at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Simply titled A Ghost Story, Affleck plays the deceased husband to Mara’s grieving widow, and his apparitional appearance from the great beyond looks like…a guy with an white bed sheet over his body with the eyeholes cut out. A risk-taking venture from the trio that first found Sundance success together with Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, this has been praised as a surreal mediation on life, love, grief, and the passage of time.
A Ghost Story – from hot indie distributor A24 (which took Moonlight all the way to a Best Picture win) – opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
