In the new teaser for Pixar’s Cars 3, the seemingly washed-up Lightning McQueen says defiantly to his doubters, “I decide when I’m done.”
That seems to be Pixar’s sentiment to moviegoers who aren’t necessarily clamoring for a third Cars movie, particularly after Cars 2 was easily Pixar’s most corporately crass cash grab to date.
At the very least, it looks like Lasseter’s animation pit crew is looking to reimagine the look and tone of the franchise, giving it a rougher, darker, more aggressive edge while still being family friendly. It remains to be seen if it’s worthwhile, but at least they’re trying something different rather than coasting on autopilot.
Cars 3 opens this summer on June 16, 2017.
