There is going to be a major Oscar push for Annette Bening this Awards Season, and if this trailer is any indication then there’ll be a lot of 21st Century women lining up to see what the hype is all about.
Definitely playing to the female demographic, 20th Century Women is about a mid-50s single mother who struggles to raise her adolescent son in late-1970s Southern California. Comedy, drama, and life lessons are sure to ensue, with requisite snark for good measure.
It’d probably be easy to dismiss this as an awards bait chick flick (and who knows, it still might be), but this comes from indie distributor A24 which has a long track record of sophisticated cinema.
From director Mike Mills (who steered legend Christopher Plummer to his Oscar win in the film Beginners), this co-stars Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Billy Crudup.
20th Century Women opens on December 25, 2016.
