Production on Steven Spielberg‘s dystopian sci-fi blockbuster Ready Player One is about to be in full swing, and so are the first of the (allegedly) unsanctioned image and video tweets. (See below)
Based on the YA novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One is the near-future reality of 2044 in which society is so immersed into the virtual reality world known as OASIS that people spend most of their lives there, from going to school to participating in the marketplace.
Greed and corporate corruption comes into play (naturally), but when people discover that James Halliday – the creator of OASIS – has left Easter Eggs throughout the VR world, it leads to a big VR hunt. The Easter Eggs are like Willy Wonka’s Golden Tickets, and acquiring them could lead to taking over Halliday’s entire empire. The key to success: a vast knowledge of 1980s pop culture.
Who better than Spielberg to direct that?
Below is a video and images tweeted out by the Twitter handle “I Choose Birmingham” (methinks I smell a studio marketing plant, but I could be wrong).
Ready Player One won’t open in theaters until March 30, 2018. It stars Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller, and Ben Mendelsohn.
