“Arrival” may be referring to an alien invasion but, for movie audiences, it could very well stand for the breakout moment by lauded director Denis Villeneuve.
The filmmaker behind last year’s critically-praised Sicario and the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, Villeneuve is a master craftsman who tells riveting stories that get under your skin. Arrival – with its Thinking Man’s Independence Day aura – could be Villeneuve’s first movie with mass appeal. It also looks to transcend its familiar premise by doing what sci-fi does best: exploring both the importance and fragile limits of our shared humanity.
Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, Arrival lives up to its name in theaters nationwide on November 11, 2016.
