Despite the operatic scale that Christopher Nolan‘s films are known for (the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar), this first teaser for his upcoming Dunkirk is about as mild as it gets. At least in how much it reveals. The tone it sets, however, portends a movie that goes for the jugular.
Just a minute long, this first look hints at a Saving Private Ryan-like beach invasion, with a soundtrack that ramps up the intensity more than the actual visuals do. Nevertheless, if the final movie can feel like this, it should deliver.
It’s a stacked all-star cast, led by Nolan vet Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Academy Award winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies). The World War II movie, centered around a British military operation, co-stars Cillian Murphy (another Nolan vet) and One Direction heartthrob Harry Styles in his acting debut.
Epic in scale, the film is being shot entirely on IMAX 65mm film and 65mm large-format photography.
Dunkirk opens in theaters on July 21, 2017.
