Following the debut teaser fueled by the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage”, the latest (and possibly last) trailer for Star Trek Beyond – see below – ditches the fun rock-and-rap attitude for a bigger, bolder, more emotional tone.
I’m still not exactly sure what to expect from this movie. Trailer #2 certainly has all the elements I’m looking for, but it almost feels too conventional. We’ve seen this kind of thing before, not so much from Star Trek (well, not pre-J.J. Abrams anyway) but from any number of “Hero’s Journey” formulas.
Historically, Star Trek always distinguished itself from your run-of-the-mill mythos by being about its core Kirk/Spock/Bones trio, the tight-knit camaraderie of the entire Enterprise crew, plus science (and philosophy and ethics) as much as fiction.
Based on what we’ve seen so far, I think we’ll be guaranteed at the very least a fun space adventure (and I’m excited to see what Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin does with the franchise). But as far as distinguishing itself, the one hope I’m holding on to right now is that the lead co-screenwriter is the very gifted Simon Pegg (who also plays Scotty).
Star Trek Beyond opens nationwide July 22, 2016.
