Good Wolff Hunting? But as an assassin.
That’s a quippy but basically-accurate nutshell of The Accountant (at least based on its debut trailer – see below), the new thriller starring Ben Affleck that opens this fall.
Plus, in an added layer to Affleck’s math savant character Christian Wolff: he appears to be somewhere on the spectrum. Assuming that’s a proper read of what’s shown here, it’ll be intriguing to see how Autism is portrayed in the context of a hired gun.
Also intriguing? The early drafts of Good Will Hunting were more in the thriller mode, except that Matt Damon‘s Will became the target of government agencies rather than a sharp-shooting mercenary. Watching this teaser, I wonder if one of Affleck’s major draws to the script was to work with material that was closer to his and Damon’s original vision for what became a heartwarming drama (a tear-jerker that went on to give them each their first Oscars, no less, so I’m sure they’re thoroughly satisfied with where that landed).
Added bonus: co-star Anna Kendrick, at one point, asks Affleck’s Wolff in exasperated bewilderment, “Who are you?!” Is it me, or is everyone instantly going to want Ben to answer that question with, “I’m Batman.”?
Directed by Gavin O’Connor (Miracle, TV’s The Americans) and co-starring Kendrick, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor, and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), The Accountant opens nationwide on October 14.
(And following in the footsteps of October releases for Argo, Gone Girl, and Gone Baby Gone, Affleck is quickly taking ownership of an entire month of the year.)
