Jurassic World 2 will be better than the first. Producers Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall just guaranteed that.

The sequel to one of the biggest (and biggest surprise) hits of all time finally has a director:  J.A. Bayona. And virtually everyone reading this said: “Who?”

Bayona is a young but up-and-coming film director whose two previous films have shown great promise. They’ve revealed not only a great filmmaker, but one who’s a perfect match to the elements that make for a great Jurassic Park movie.

2007’s Spanish-language horror tale The Orphange and 2012’s real-life disaster drama The Impossible (based on one family’s harrowing experience through 2004’s Thailand tsunami) not only showed great skill and command for the kind of suspense, tension, and scares you’d want from a dino blockbuster, but also the kind of deep emotional connections that are poignant rather than trite.

Honestly, it’s amazing that it’s taken this long for Bayona to get a movie this big (although make no mistake, the lengthy, wince-and-cringe inducing tsunami sequence from The Impossible was indeed big). Bayona is a serious filmmaker working in genre, and he will most certainly elevate the Jurassic universe to new heights, and depths.

Jurassic Park 2 (which has yet to receive an official title) will be released on June 22, 2018.
