Here’s your first look at possibly the top Oscar contender for 2016.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, The Birth Of A Nation is the epic passion project of young African-American mutli-hyphenate filmmaker Nate Parker, who wrote, directed, and starred. Dubbed the “Braveheart of American slavery”, it depicts the early 19th Century slave rebellion led by Christian pastor (and slave) Nat Turner.
The film was picked up at Sundance by Fox Searchlight Pictures for a record purchase price of $17.5 million. It co-stars Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Mark Boone Jr., Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Gabrielle Union.
The Birth Of A Nation will be released this fall on October 7, 2016.
