Batman/Spider-Man/Wonder Woman News & More: The Latest From CinemaCon

The annual convention of movie theater operators – called CinemaCon – is in full swing. Theater owners are in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace, getting an onslaught of first looks of the movies they’ll be showing us for the rest of 2016.

In case you missed any of the reports from the past few days, here’s a bullet-point list of some of the stuff exhibitors are seeing – and, in some cases, how they’re responding.

  • Warner Bros. and Ben Affleck officially confirmed that the actor/director will be serving in both roles for a new stand-alone Batman film, based on Affleck’s script.
  • The first footage of Wonder Woman was shown. Set during WWI, the clips from her origin story included the warrior princess battling a platoon of soldiers, a brief shot of Chris Pine on a motorcycle, and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) using her shield to deflect gunfire.
  • Will Smith promised exhibitors that his Suicide Squad will “fill those theaters up real thick.”
  • The new Spider-Man movie has an official title – Spider-Man: Homecoming. Marvel guru Kevin Feige confirmed that the reboot won’t waste time retelling Spidey’s origin story. “I think everybody in the world already knows,” he said. It opens next summer, July 7, 2017. Michael Keaton is currently in talks to play the as-yet-announced villain. (UPDATE: Talks with Keaton dropped. He will no longer be involved with the movie.)
  • The first footage for the sci-fi drama Passengers was shown. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, it’s sort of a Cast Away in space but with two people stranded instead of one. It opens this holiday season. Pratt encouraged theater owners to “double up the (popcorn) order right around Christmas because you are going to sell a lot of it.” The footage received rapturous applause by the assembled theater owners, to which Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman said, “Let’s see Netflix do that.”
  • The first footage for the new Brad Pitt/Marion Cotillard WWII spy romance debuted. Titled Allied, it’s directed by Forrest Gump Oscar-winner Robert Zemeckis. Variety described the reel as “sensual, stylish, reeking of Oscar pedigree”.
  • The first trailer for The Magnificent Seven remake debuted (and will likely hit the internet soon). It stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt (he’s everywhere!), and Ethan Hawke. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer), it will open this September.
  • New clips of Warner Bros.’ The Legend Of Tarzan reportedly got some of the event’s loudest applause. Directed by David Yates (the last 4 Harry Potter movies) and starring Alexander Skarsgård, Margot RobbieChristoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson, it opens this summer on July 1.
