Now you can add another record to the growing list of them being set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And this time, it’s one that’s stood for over a decade.
On Monday, Episode VII hauled in over $40 million to set a new Monday standard, crushing the benchmark that stood since 2004 when Spider-Man 2 tallied $27.2 million on its first Monday of release.
Something tells me that Tuesday and Wednesday are about to fall, like a band of defenseless Jakkuvians. And then Star Wars’ dominance over nearly every day of the week will be complete (although it’ll take a great disturbance in the Force to grab Saturday, which Jurassic World still reigns over by $1.5 million. It’s unlikely that raking up the necessary $70 million on a future Saturday is in The Force Awakens‘ destiny.)
(Thanks to Peter Chattaway for helping me catch the Saturday discrepancy.)
Actually, Star Wars was only the #3 movie on Saturday, behind Jurassic World and The Avengers. So it won’t have dominance over EVERY day of the week.
Thank you for the correction Peter!
