Oh, so that’s what the ten rings are.
For those unfamiliar with the mythology, the new trailer for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a nice little primer on the titular rings, what they are, how they’re used, and the mysterious ancient organization behind them.
Wrapped up in that is a complicated father / son dynamic between Wenwu (Hong Kong legend Tony Leung) and his now-adult heir Shang-Chi (rising star Simu Liu).
Unsurprisingly, there’s a lot of familiar Hero’s Journey beats here, mixed in with Marvel’s patented CGI excess, but it’s all in the service of something that (for the MCU anyway) is fresh.
Co-starring Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Raya and the Last Dragon) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy, Short Term 12), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens this Labor Day weekend exclusively in theaters (i.e. skipping Disney Plus) on September 3, 2021.
