STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Final Trailer: “It’s true. All of it.”

The final trailer for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has finally dropped, and it reveals far less than we’d hoped…but possibly answers the questions raised by the Luke-less poster that was revealed on Sunday.

The early theorizing that occurred following the sans-Skywalker poster had fans guessing that perhaps Luke would die so early on in Episode VII that he wouldn’t even warrant a glimpse on the main promotional art. Now, with this trailer, it’s safer to assume just the opposite.

Instead of being killed off in the beginning, we likely won’t see Luke until the film’s third act, or even until a cliffhanging end. By the sounds of Han Solo, 30 years after the defeat of the Empire, the Jedi are now just a myth. Stories. Legend. Which likely means that Luke Skywalker has gone all Ben Kenobi somewhere far off, deep in seclusion. Waiting…for what? My hunch: whatever’s going down in the final half-hour of Episode VII, the fallout of which Luke will then lead in Episode VIII.

Of course I could be completely wrong, and I really don’t care if I am. Because at this point, whatever JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan have ready for us on December 18th, I have a hard time thinking it won’t do anything but completely rule all.

A couple of hunches. One, that feminine voice in the trailer is…Luke Skywalker. In disguise.

And two, if Abrams gets his way, I’m guessing none of us are going to see Luke Skywalker until we see him for the first time in a dark theater, on the big screen.

UPDATE: My first hunch is probably incorrect. As my friend Nathan Glembowski suggested, that feminine voice is likely Maz Kanata, the CGI motion-capture alien played by Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o. The only image we’ve seen of her is the small sketch in the poster collage, just to the left of R2.

  1. I love your thoughts on this.My favorite scene in that trailer is the last one where Finn and Ren are set to square off. The sheer desperation in Finn’s face leave me hopeful that we get, what may be, the best light saber duel ever… and of course, my hunch is that Luke saves the day.

    1. Yeah, JJ always casts actors with a lot of passion and intensity. Finn’s definitely showing it there.

I’m beginning to wonder if JJ is going to continue the “twins” motif of the saga, except the twist will be Luke saying, “Kylo…I…am your Uncle.” Meaning Kylo and Rey are twin siblings born to Han and Leia.

      We shall see…

      1. Or maybe it’s a reverse of that, i.e. Kylo saying to Luke, “Luke…I…am your nephew.” Then that’d give Hamill another opportunity to yell “NOOOOOOOOOOO!” like he’s just been waterboarded.
